Project Glass – Essential Genius or a Step Too Far?

Google has just released details of a new venture called Project Glass, which is something we all saw coming eventually, though perhaps not quite yet. In a nutshell, Project Glass refers to the latest creative effort by the biggest search engine the world has ever seen, culminating in what they have dubbed the world’s first ‘Augmented Reality’ glasses. Roughly translated, the glasses are essentially something of a wearable Smartphone of the highest order, with a tiny screen in the corner of one of the lenses to allow the wearer to see what they are doing.

The glasses are controlled by both voice commands and movement, therefore allowing the user complete and total hands-free control to a whole new extent. Google has suggested by way of an early ad that the glasses will offer at least 14 specific functions, including the likes of video conferencing and email – along with the usual access to Twitter, Facebook and Google Maps etc.So, the obvious question that immediately springs to mind is not that of how cool they are – which is pretty much obvious – but do we really need them? Or more importantly, are they safe?

Well, as to whether we need them or not, they really are nothing more than a natural progression of the current hands-free technology we all use while on the move – albeit one with a rather sci-fi twist. The ability to surf the web, find directions, communicate with friends, take photos, watch movies and pretty much anything else with just the blink of an eye is pretty appealing by anyone’s standards. On the other hand, some have suggested that walking around any public place with a screen in front of the eye is a recipe for disaster and will result in more accidents and collisions than ever before. Plus we’ll all be reaching for the adult bibs while trying to look up the calorie content of what we’re eating every time we’re wearing the things in a restaurant.Genius or a step too far?It’s over to the buyer to decide later this year!

Has internet made us lazy?

There was a time when booking space in the Auberge de Jeunesse Amsterdam was a complicated affair. One had to carry out a lot of correspondence just to ensure that the rooms were booked and available when one landed after a long trip. Today, one just has to log on to the Internet and pay the advance payment and finalize the booking. A very convenient option, right? Now that the Internet is available, chances of mishaps and complications should come down, right? Well, that is not how it works.

Since online booking of hotel rooms has become convenient, more and more people are delaying the process till the last formant. The end result is that they invariably have to compromise on the choice of the hotel room. This is a very pertinent and important question about the efficacy of online solutions. Is it really helping us become more efficient? Or is it giving as an excuse to become lazy? Something that we would have completed in a very contentious manner in the past is delayed simply because we believe we have lots of time at our hands.

Of course, it is not as if each and every online solution works perfectly. There is always scope for something going wrong because of the manual intervention involved. The best option is to keep in mind that online solutions will work well provided you behave in a very enthusiastic and disciplined manner. If you adopt the casual approach, chances are high that you will just not be in a position to take proper advantage of the fantastic online solutions.

Had this not been the case, each and every individual would have become a lot more efficient after making use of computers. The sad truth is that we spent bulk of our time researching for useless stuff on the Internet and then proceed to complain that we are not in a position to complete our work on time.

Website blackout- Was it a wise move?

Is the recent blackout by websites on the Internet protesting against SOPA justified? The blackout is for the ostensible reason to protest against the censorship by the government. However, what about the fact that the websites have gone off-line without the consent of all their readers and Web surfers? Many persons are upset about the fact that they cannot access Wikipedia as and when they wanted. Is it not a form of censorship by the websites themselves? Of course, their cause is just but does that make the reaction acceptable?

In my opinion, the websites have committed a big mistake by resorting to such a strong action so early. What will they do if the government refuses to relent? Are they completely shut down the website in protest? That would be no different than throwing a flame into a diesel storage tank just because the supplier did not offer discount. Who is going to suffer because of the blackout? The government is not necessarily enthusiastic about promoting the Internet, right? After all, it helps people interact with each other without any physical or geographical limitations. Misinformation and disinformation campaigns become difficult if people can interact with each other without any restrictions.

The truth is that such symbolic gestures are not going to make an impact when lobbyists with deep pockets are supporting the bill. This does not mean that the bill will be accepted in its current form. However, the websites have committed a mistake by going in for such a disruptive stance from the very beginning. Instead, they should have done something different that could have given people the freedom to express their opinions better. Only time will tell whether this gesture by the websites will backfire or not. Of course, the competitors will be happy because they received bulk of the traffic that was diverted when the popular websites did not work.

Online services – how reliable?

How reliable is the Internet? We make use of the Internet on a daily basis. More and more people are spending time on the web for not just entertainment but commerce related activities as well. Certain services that took a lot of time in the real-life are being offered in a convenient manner on the Internet. Purchasing stuff from the Internet is just a matter of pushing the right buttons. However, not all services provided on the Internet can be called trustworthy.

I recently came across a website of tailors offering alteration services for three piece suits and other clothes. One just had to send clothes across to the service provider with the measurements and the same would be altered and sent back to your address. On the face of it, the service seems to be a wonderful option. Even small tasks like alteration can take a lot of time if you have a busy schedule.

In such a scenario, I was interested in knowing more about this service. I noticed that there was a link on the website on how we should measure the parts of the body when sending over the measurements. I clicked on the link but was surprised to find that it was empty. Now, this raised fundamental questions about the service that the website offered. How on earth should one get alterations done if one cannot send measurements through email?
If the customer is to make a personal trip to the tailor to get measured, then what would be the point of setting up the website? The funny thing was that this website had numerous testimonials from satisfied customers but did not have this important issue completed. Needless to say, I was not interested in dealing with the website any further and preferred sticking to my traditional option.

Much has been written about the Apple Mac by starry eyed users and truth be told, though expensive, it is a good product. And it is not without reason that people gush over it. In spite of all the advantages, there are some factors that you need to consider before you put your hard earned money in a Mac. These are not shortcomings of the product, but rather limitations that might affect you if you fall into that category.

First off, is the often claimed fact that viruses don’t affect a Mac. It is not so. People who create malicious software want it to spread to as many people as possible. The Mac cannot be upgraded or customized unlike a windows based computer. You will need to buy a new one! And they are very expensive. Finally, if you are a gaming enthusiast, forget it. You can’t play very many games on a Mac: you will have to settle for a video game console. So if any of the above affects you, do give it a thought.

The Kindle Page Dilemma

When I bought a Kindle, I thought it had it all: a great resolution screen that wouldn’t hurt my eyes, an easy-to-use interface that wasn’t a hassle to navigate, and a connection to Amazon worldwide which made book-buying so simple to use even my gran, who does not know what a computer “mouse” is, could use it.

And in the main I was right…only there’s one thing about the Kindle that they don’t tell you when you buy it. It’s not a secret, exactly, but it is something you should be aware of.

The Kindle doesn’t do page numbers. That’s right: does not do. And by that I mean that instead of page numbers it uses percentages instead. So, to locate a particular chapter, rather than going to Chapter 1 or to page 12, you have to remember the percentage. This is a bit of a pain at first, and if it wasn’t for the fact that you can make notes on certain pages – and flick through these quickly and easily – then I’m sure there would have been a serious uproar by now.

Who knows if this will change? My friend In, who words for it support london , tells me that Amazon’s argument is as follows: when you buy a Kindle book you buy the rights to a book, rather than the physical copy itself. As such, they are under no obligation to bend to the traditions of old.

That’s as may be, Amazon, but surely when you think about it, it would have been nice?

Netbook+Dumbness=Ouch

If we are honest with ourselves, we will agree that ‘dumbness’is a universal affliction. Okay, so some of us may register less highly on the ‘dumb-ometer’than others, but we all experience moments of sheer stupidity now and then. At least that is what I believe because it makes me feel a whole lot better about myself!

Here is a brief example of a dumb episode in my recent life…

I was looking through some gadgetry on an online techie site, when I spotted something that looked super-duper useful. There, nestled amongst video to DVD converters, USB humping dogs and r4i cards was a universal car netbook charger. And, considering that I spend over half my life blogging away on the Net, I thought this would be an excellent investment!!!

I ordered the gizmo, it arrived at my door and it looked absolutely, totally top banana. The sun was shining and life was dandy… until I tried it out. Once I had plugged it in (with the correct connector), the charging light lit-up on my netbook. ‘Ace’, I thought, ‘it’s all working perfectly!’. But then the light blinked back off and there was a horrid sizzling noise.

Up until now, none of this had been my fault and the dumbness gene had not kicked in. But then that I had the ‘brainwave’of plugging my other netbook in (my BRAND NEW ONE) without assessing the damage to my last one! And this was a very, very silly idea. I mean, it was pretty apparent that this sadistic gadget had already fried one motherboard.

You can probably guess the rest of the story. Yup: two dead notebooks with only one idiot to blame - yours truly. Why, oh why had I done this terrible thing to myself???

Sheer, unadulterated dumbness!!!!!!!
