Trends

There is a trend in our society and it goes something like this:

Person A: “How are you today?”

Person B (Just had the worst day ever: wife left him, lost his job, fell down a cliff-side with his mistress the weekend before and is now suffering a sprained ankle, burnt his mouth on a pop-tart in the morning after stepping on a gift left there by the dog that the wife bought and left behind, especially to spite her husband who the dog never liked anyway–): “I’m fine.”

What a trend! Nobody really says how they actually are anymore. Saying anything negative is frowned upon and considered a sign of failure, thus making you look feeble and pathetic at best. Thanks to annoying people and their positive thinking attitude we are all cursed to keep our sordid lives hidden from view at all times whatever the consequence. Our sadness covered with a veneer of mock happiness that is so well practiced that it practically has a life of its own…

So last night in the pub I tried a different approach. When Doug the bar-man asked me how I was doing, I said, “Terrible actually. I have a cyst removal next week and also this really annoying itchy scalp and also, yep, it does look fairly likely that I may have contracted a sexually transmitted disease, which is a bit of a bummer.”

Doug smiled, poured me a pint and said “that’s refreshing to hear–” then he leaned in closer and said, “but haven’t we all my friend–”
