Command and Conquer

Now in its fourth era, the Command and Conquer franchise started way back in 1995. With its basic graphics and basic RTS (Real Time Strategy) gameplay, Command and Conquer was, nevertheless, a huge hit.
You played as either the Brotherhood of Nod or the GDI (Global Defence Initiative), two factions fighting it out to control the world’s supply of Tiberium. Tiberium is a strange alien crystal substance that contains many precious metals and is the resource in the game that must be harvested to give you money to buy troops and build factories and war machines.
Admittedly there is something a little “Dune"about the premise, but it worked nonetheless. The Brotherhood is generally seen as the “bad"faction and the GDI the “good"faction. Although, warring across the planet to control a substance for one’s own means can hardly ever be seen as good in my opinion.
The 1995 Command and Conquer is one of the greatest games of all time. The story was fun if a little shallow and the gameplay was excellent. Even the graphics, which, by today’s standards are awful, are characterful and bring back great memories of my childhood.
Always a massive fan of the Brotherhood of Nod, I loved the in-party intrigue that went on behind the scenes. People trying to rise in the ranks at the expense of others always led to some great cut scenes. Also, who could forget Kane? If ever there was an actor who became famous for the portrayal of an iconic video game character, it is Joseph D. Kucan, who plays Kane (who could really do with an appointment at tattoo removal stockport if the truth be told).
I recently downloaded this old game to play it again and it is just as good now as it was 15 years ago. Long live the C&C franchise.
