Writer Without A Cause.

If you are a creative person by nature, then not being able to express yourself can seem like the most frustrating thing in the world. Authors can often suffer from writers’ block and artists will also experience ‘idea droughts’ from time to time. Songwriters run into problems when putting a track together and there is an equivalent ‘creative blockage’ in any other type of art.

But why does this happen? If you are a creative person, then shouldn’t you have a never-ending supply of nifty ideas in the storage space of your mind? Well, the simple answer is no, you should not. Unless you are superhuman, then you are bound to run out of fresh ideas from time to time; it is just an inevitability.

The best way to handle things when your creativity grinds to a halt is to look around for inspiration. This is often easier said than done! However, you will learn the best way to find new inspiration after putting in a little practice. Some writers get many of their ideas from reading news stories whilst many artists will discover the spark of creativity by looking at other people’s work. Other people will find that they come up with the basis for a story or picture simply by relaxing their mind. After all, if you allow yourself to become frustrated then you are not going to feel much like writing, drawing or penning a tune.

Please do not think I am being smug about this; because I am most certainly not. I have spent days on end being angry or exasperated because my creativity appears to have gone off on holiday. It can leave you feeling thoroughly depressed if you cannot think of anything or if you have an idea but you just cannot put it across in a half-decent way.

Perseverance is the answer. Every individual has their own way of dealing with a creative dry season and it is simply a case of discovering what it is.
