The Real Customer Service

Time, eh? You look back and see what was what, and hopefully live and learn. When I was working in a small corner-shop at the age of sixteen, and an old-lady argued with me ferociously because “back in my day five-pounds-fifty was actually seven-pounds-ninety-two in ‘modern silly money’”, she was right, of course. What could I say? Just a mere boy! When I worked on the chicken-counter of a popular (unmentionable) supermarket and a chicken–one of my darn excellent, perfectly cooked chickens I’ll have you know–didn’t meet the required standards of a pesky customer, because it had things inside it that shouldn’t have been there—“those are called organs, sir, and the reason they are there is that the chicken needed them to get about”—the customer was right. All through my life customers have been right. There’s nothing a customer can be wrong about, or is there? Click this link and see what the Enigin crew have to say about this.

Sayings have forever got us into deep trouble, but it isn’t only the English who are responsible, of course. Every country in the world has at least ten ridiculous sayings / expressions which only exist to make the world go around smoothly, to make customers feel wanted, needed and good. So it’s refreshing to see a business blog actually standing up and admitting that the customer can’t possibly always be right. Without that saying we wouldn’t have had customers to begin with, so it’s easy to see how this silliness has stuck around for so long.
